Dr Catherine Hynes has a PhD in clinical psychology and neuropsychology from the University of Queensland. She uses evidence-based therapies, that is, therapies that have been tested in scientific research studies, and shown to be effective means of helping people. The therapies Catherine practices are consistent with psychological, biological and medical science. They combine knowledge of how people learn, how our physiology and our social structures shape us to help people get more out of life.
Catherine approaches therapy from a position of optimism – life, despite its many challenges, is well worth living, and can be more enjoyable if we learn new ways of thinking and acting. She works with people in a warm and supportive way to help them decide what therapy and what strategies are most suitable to their personal tastes and circumstances.
All therapies that Catherine practices are time-limited, and she will negotiate with you the number of sessions you can expect to attend to address the difficulty you are facing. Most of the therapies Catherine practices involve learning and practising skills outside of sessions. This is a little bit like physiotherapy for the mind – talking about stretches and exercise is helpful, but you must regularly practice in order to increase flexibility and lower your pain levels.

Therapies which Catherine may draw upon in treatment include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – helps people understand the relationships between thinking patterns, behaviour patterns and emotions, and to make changes to thoughts and behaviour to improve emotional well-being.
- Schema Therapy – an enhanced form of CBT that helps people recognise unhelpful, lifelong patterns of thoughts and behaviour that originated in childhood or adolescence, and choose new more helpful ways of thinking and behaving to improve wellbeing.
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – a therapy for trauma, phobias, grief, and addictions that helps people to resolve negative beliefs about themselves or the world into more positive beliefs by releasing blocked physical sensations and memories using eye movements that facilitate reprocessing difficult memories.
- Mindfulness Therapies – enhanced CBT therapies that teach people to focus on the present moment, and change our habit of spending our lives either re-living the past or worrying about the future. These therapies include:
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – focuses on identifying people’s most cherished values, and committing to living according to them in the here and now.
- Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) – focuses on developing compassion for oneself, and learning to change self-critical thinking.
- Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) – parenting assistance for developmentally normal children and/or children with developmental disabilities that encourages warmth and high quality interactions with children, as well as suggesting specific strategies for managing challenging behaviour. Catherine is an accredited Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P) practitioner.
- Ego State Therapy – when somebody is having difficulties with internal conflicts, and different parts of themselves are disagreeing, competing or having arguments, it can be helpful to map out those different parts, and teach them to communicate in more helpful ways.
