Research into lifespan development suggests that your development as a person spans all aspects of what it is to be human.
Throughout this process, you will continue to gain clarity of your personal values and your sense of self, as well as your place in connection with others such as in a faith community, in the workplace, and in social and familial systems.
Your Personal Faith
Your religious faith or spirituality, just like cognitive development and moral growth, continues to evolve across your whole life journey.
Several renowned authors have researched the evolution of personal faith, suggesting that there are various stages of development. James Fowler offers one such model in his book “Stages of Faith”, which outlines six stages of spiritual development, each stage being an expansion or a broadening of the person’s view, building on learnings from previous stages.
Other authors of interest are M. Scott Peck (perhaps most well known for his book “The Road Less Travelled”), Heinz Streib (who challenges Fowler’s six stage model), and Nicola Slee (who comes from a feminist approach).
In the counselling process, I hold high regard for your spirituality, as much as any other aspect of your humanity. This is because your spirituality informs your values and morals, which guide your thoughts, words, and actions. If parts of your lifestyle are not aligned with these core parts of your identity, you might experience internal conflict and dissatisfaction with day to day life.
My goal as a psychologist is to offer you a safe space in which you can ask the difficult questions without fear of judgment, and to assist you to navigate that time of transition from one stage of faith to the next.
