Anxiety is an emotion experienced when an individual feels tense, has worried thoughts and experiences physical changes such an increased heart rate. It usually occurs when a person is in a situation, they feel they are unable to manage effectively.
It is normal to experience anxiety from time to time – for instance, when you feel threatened or under stressful circumstances.
However, anxiety becomes a problem when it gets in the way of an individual leading their lives (eg avoiding social situations).
What are the Symptoms of Anxiety?
The symptoms of anxiety will vary from individual to individual. They usually involve excessive worry and a preoccupation with negative thoughts. Symptoms include:
- Trouble breathing
- Rapid heart rate
- Feeling faint or dizzy
- Shaking (eg hands, legs)
- Feeling restless
- Avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations
How is Anxiety treated?
Psychotherapy is the most common method of treatment used with people suffering from anxiety. Of these, Cognitive Behaviour Threapy (CBT) has been proven to be effective but other therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are increasingly being used by clinicians.
Depending on the type of intervention, treatment involves replacing or changing the individual’s relationship with negative thoughts. In addition to this, identifying anxiety provoking triggers and teaching skills to handle anxiety when in stressful situations, is an important part of treatment.
